Product Overview
The Hitch Pin – with Chain is a medium-carbon steel coupling pin supplied with a pre-fitted captive chain that keeps the hair pin attached to the pin body at all times. When the pin is removed during implement uncoupling, the hair pin is pulled clear of the cross-hole but remains connected to the pin via the chain, preventing the clip from being dropped and lost in the field.
Hair pin loss during implement changes is a significant source of field downtime. A dropped hair pin in long grass or cultivated soil is rarely recoverable, and the machine cannot be moved safely until a replacement is found. The captive chain on the Hitch Pin – with Chain eliminates this problem by keeping both components together regardless of how the pin is handled during coupling and uncoupling operations.
Material Specification and Technical Detail
The pin shank uses the same medium-carbon steel specification and zinc plating as the standard L-HPH series. The captive chain is a short welded-link steel chain attached at one end to the pin head and at the other to the hair pin wire loop. The chain length is set to allow the hair pin to be fully withdrawn from the cross-hole while remaining attached to the pin body, with enough length to allow easy handling during insertion.
The hair pin wire diameter is matched to the cross-hole in the pin shank as for the standard pre-assembled version. Both pin and chain assembly are zinc plated as a complete unit after assembly to provide consistent corrosion protection across all components. The chain link diameter is selected to provide adequate strength for the retention forces encountered without adding unnecessary weight to the assembly.

Application and Operating Environment
The Hitch Pin – with Chain is used in all standard hitch pin applications where the frequency of implement changes creates a significant risk of hair pin loss. It is particularly valued in contracting operations where multiple implements are changed daily and where the equipment operates in conditions that make dropped small parts difficult to locate. Compatible with John Deere, Massey Ferguson, New Holland, Kubota, Case IH, Fendt, and Claas.
The captive chain assembly adds slightly to the overall complexity of the pin compared to a plain hair pin, but the practical benefit in high-frequency coupling applications outweighs this. The chain and hair pin assembly does not interfere with the coupling operation and can be handled in the same way as a standard pre-assembled pin during both coupling and uncoupling.
OEM Compatibility and Cross-Reference
The Hitch Pin – with Chain is dimensionally compatible with coupling pin applications from John Deere, Massey Ferguson, New Holland, Kubota, Case IH, Fendt, and Claas. The shank dimensions and cross-hole position match equivalent standard hitch pin sizes, allowing the chain retention version to be specified as a direct upgrade for any application currently using a standard pin.
For applications where a positive mechanical lock is required in addition to chain retention of the clip, the Locking Collar variant provides over-centre collar security with the option of a captive chain on the collar release mechanism. Our 3-point hitch kit consolidates the most frequently replaced linkage components into a single order.
Installation Procedure
Follow the steps below for correct installation of the Hitch Pin – with Chain in standard agricultural coupling applications.
01
Insert Pin Through the Coupling
Push the pin through the coupling hole in the normal way, holding the chain to one side to prevent it from interfering with insertion.
02
Engage the Hair Pin
Push the hair pin through the cross-hole until fully seated. The chain should hang clear of the coupling with enough slack to allow the hair pin to be engaged and disengaged freely.
03
Uncoupling Procedure
To remove the pin, pull the hair pin clear of the cross-hole and let it hang on the chain. Withdraw the pin axially. Both pin and clip remain together via the chain.
04
Inspect the Chain
Check the chain links for wear, cracking, or corrosion at each service. A failed chain defeats the retention purpose. Replace the complete assembly if the chain shows significant wear.

Customer Feedback
“We have been stocking the Hitch Pin – with Chain for two seasons across our dealer network in Normandy. Fit to John Deere and Claas equipment has been exact and we have had zero returns on dimensional grounds. The zinc finish is holding up well through wet field conditions.”
Patrick F. – France
“The Hitch Pin – with Chain is exactly what we needed for our contracting fleet. Fast implement changes are important when you are working to a tight harvest schedule, and having a pin that couples and uncouples reliably with one hand saves time on every field entry.”
Gareth W. – United Kingdom
“Good product and straightforward ordering process. The Hitch Pin – with Chain covers all the pin sizes we need for our Fendt and New Holland machines. Packaging is solid and part numbers are clearly marked, which makes goods-in processing quick.”
Lars N. – Denmark
